Care and handling of silk hanks

Silk products are 'living things' and as such need to breathe. Don't keep your silk hanks in a compressed fashion or in sealed zip loc bags. If you use zip loc bags, punch a few holes in the bag to allow air to enter the bag. If you intend to store them for a long period of time, it is best to iron them and then pack the flat with tissue paper between each color. Keep away from light of any kind as the UV rays will do damage to the colors.

How to wash silk hanks: Solid colors: use fresh clean water for each color. Sometimes the dye will leach out so if you use the same water for different colored silk hanks, you may transfer some of the color from one to the other. Use a few drops of dish washing detergent and cool or cold water. Swish the hanks around in the sink using your fingers to swish the hank from side to side, then rinse in running water. To rinse, ball up the hank and squeeze the water out as you run it under the running water. When the water runs clear open the hank and place it against a glass pane (window) or a mirror. Just flatten it out and stick it to the clean glass. When it dries it will fall free from the glass and be semi-ironed. If you iron your hanks, use the proper setting and place a white cotton hank over your silk hank and iron through the white hank. This will prevent scorching the hanks.
